Caulfield: Hoo Hah! September starts on a Tuesday this year! Pushing Labor day to the 7th, and school past that! That's, like, an extra week to put off my summer reading! Mrs. Olsen: You haven't started your summer reading? Caulfield: I'm only just now looking at the calendar.

Why is Caulfield hanging with Mrs Olsen? Doesn’t he try to avoid that?

Didn’t they become friends when he cared for her garden or something?

For decades traditional schools here in NC have started in August – man how I envied those northern kids who went after Labor Day. At least now the youngin’s have great air conditioning!

Yup, school started today here, too.

Our school (suburb north of Philly) usually doesn’t go back until after Labor Day. However, this year they start next Monday, August 31st. I am wondering if this is advancing planning for potential snow days as we’ve had a couple of bad winters.

Always hated summer reading. It cut into my time in the mountains camping. Did a lot of reading around the camp fire.

Last time our school district didn’t start till the 7th like that, we were able to get a camping spot at Yosemite on a day’s notice (usually it’s about a year’s wait) and passed school bus after school bus during the hours it took us to get there. At the Park Service lodge, we ran into other families we knew from our school. Fast forward to this year, when school started last week so that the testing schedule would match up with the Christmas break. Scheduling to the test.

I never had a “summer reading list”. When did this become a thing? Or is it just a plot devise for cartoonists?

Explains a lot…

We had Summer Reading Lists (suggested reading). School ALWAYS started the day before Labor Day – solely to ruin a longer Summer vacation, for the parents, the kids, and the teachers.

krcaddis, Michigan decided tourism dollars were just waiting to be harvested….One year our first teacher meetings started on August 20. It was causing all kinds of problems. Tourism is our biggest industry, after cars…..And August is usually one of our better months, weather wise..And the water on the Big Lakes is finally warm! ..What’s the result? 2 to 3 more weeks of money coming into our economy and sales taxes that help fund the schools. All you do is cut the number of half days, and extend the school day 20 minutes or so. The number of classroom hours stays the same….I can sometimes eat into June a little bit, especially if they have a lot of snow days….But it’s working well for Michigan, and it feels more natural…….It helps to have an extremely pretty state, though…..

In comic strips, balloons from different characters in a conversation are separated. Not adhering to this convention makes conversations such as the one in panel 4, difficult to read, as it’s difficult to distinguish who’s talking.
I realize “Frazz” prides itself on being different, but some conventions exist for good reasons.

In the mid ’40’s thru the mid ‘50s, we didn’t have summer reading assignments. Which meant I could devour whatever books I wanted to during summer break.

Remember that joy when the school year lasts until late June!

Consider yourself exceedingly fortunate, Caulfield. Most of the schools in my area are already back in session, two full weeks before Labor Day. And there are other parts of the country where school goes year round and you fit your vacation into it.
