Rick: "...and as I shake talcum on his tummy, I marvel at what a mystery he still is, what a miracle. All the work seems worth it today. Joanie: Rick, you know what would happen if those thoughts were written by a woman?: Nothing. Such a diary couldn't get published from a woman. It'd be b anal. But you're a man. You're not expected to think about any of that stuff! So you change one dirty diaper and it's a literary event! Rick: "The hard question: have I been slumming?"

Yup, spending time with your child is right down there with taking a tour of some Third World country.

Ahh, the 80s! My ex was a naval officer, and at sea 75% of our sons’ childhoods; i.e. I single parented during those deployments and work-up periods. However, the ONE time I needed to attend a 6 day conference, he took LEAVE to take care of a 3 year old a 5 year old… vacation time!!! The eldest was in kindergarten and the younger in preschool…

This satire still works because nothing has changed in thirty years. How depressing.

But if a woman says she has better things to to than take care of the kids she produces (all by herself, apparently, if you listen to a lot of the right-wing rhetoric), then she’s a horrible person, bad mother, sinner, etc ad nauseum.

Rick is worse off than I thought, if he thinks you put talcum on a baby’s tummy after a diaper change.

true… but maybe that’s because so many mothers/women refuse to really let their husbands do anything without constant critique or criticism for not doing it their way, thus they choose to do it all themselves.

BTW, it’s the lioness who hunts for the food AND takes care of the young. Absent father, or sleeping, Roaring and killing the occasional tourist or guide is hard work.
It’s the beer and TV football for our species…
