Now it’s rewards programs that they’re pushing. No, I don’t want to carry a card for every store I shop at. No, I don’t feel like a member of a special club. I feel like a second-class citizen when I can’t walk into a store and pay the same price as anyone else. Papers please?I have stopped going to formerly favorite stores because of their rewards programs. Another one I go to asks for my phone number or zip code, supposedly as an advertising aid. All they need to know is that I have the cash in hand for the purchase. Anything else is none of their business.
And now the smartphone, beginning with the iPhone, is moving into the subscription model that is already in place with software producers like Adobe. Pay a bit each month and the upgrades are included. It works well for software, since you get upgrades to features as they are available, without having to wait for them to accumulate enough new developments to declare a new version. I don’t know about phones. It’s probably not a good business model unless you bundle phone and service.
I used to work at Radio Shack, where they made me ask everyone for their address… You would be surprised at how many people live at 1313 Mockingbird Lane.

It’s an electronic. It’ll be obsolete long before the end of the warranty and you’ll have to buy a new one anyway.

Actually, I’ve always found declining the extended warranty to take about ten seconds.

When they start aggressively pushing for the extended warranty, my answer is, “If it’s going to fall apart on me, then maybe I shouldn’t buy it.”
