I was listening to a Boston sports talk show the day after Larry Bird had said, jocularly, that Moses Malone was full of s****. The host, sports talk pioneer Guy Mainella, was of the opinion that Bird was a young man who made a stupid gaffe, he’d apologized, and that ought to be that..Of course, everyone wanted to talk about it, especially to express sentiments identical to the previous fifteen callers. Mainella was increasingly disgusted, and I was rolling when Yet Another Caller said “I wanna talk about what Larry Bird said,” and Mainella replied in an utterly weary voice, “Must you?”

@Ravenswing, so I’m guessing that you also remember listening to The Sports Huddle as well? As for Bird, her said during the victory rally at City Hall Plaza that “Moses is still full of ’it.” (R.I.P. Moses) I’m also going to guess that the caller is from the N.F.L. headquarters.

Anyone want to bitch about a time that they weren’t winning?

Back in the early days of the Boston/New England Patriots, I froze my a$$ off on the aluminum bleachers in the old Schaefer ( Foxborough ) Stadium more than once, watching the Pats lose. Even when I moved out west in the mid ’70’s, I followed them. Like the Red Sox, they got our hopes up only to dash them into broken dreams by season’s end. Hate them all you want. Envy their wins, despise their coach and quarterback, but they will always be winners to the myriad of long time Patriot fans – myself included !

I rather like the Patriots, and I’m a Packers shareholder living in Seahawks country and like them too. Hard to imagine Belichick maintaining that level of success after Brady retires (he WILL turn 65 someday, won’t he?), but Bill has become a master of living in his opponents’ heads rent-free and that’s worth a few points right there.

Be careful what you wish for . . .

CALLER: “Given that he is no longer in charge of tests, should Dhoni be relieved of his captainship of the ODI and T20 sides as well? Or does Kohli’s mediocre performance, does the problem reside in the side itself?”

    TANK: “Huh?”
