Bernice: Oh, my gosh! Piro: I know. I need to go. Bernice: No! The movie! Amazing. Piro: Best picture, 1927. Bernice: So you're a big movie buff? Piro: Only the silent ones. I like silence
“All’s Quiet On The Pestered Front”“A Silent Picture”“A Kind Of Hush” (♫)“Enjoy The Silence” (♫)“The Sound Of Silence (♫)“An Awk-ward Of Caution”
“The Roar Of Crickets”“A Muffler For The Scarf”“The Reti-cent Of A Woman”“Permanent Su-pressed And Irony”“Some Common Cens-or”“One Good Taciturn Deserves Another”or“A Mute Point”
Heh, heh, He’s even got that “teen angst brood” look going, in the last panel! (“I prefer to like you in the air of a ‘suffering artist’.. to contemplate this nothingness as a way to communicate it’s substance. Please don’t ruin this wonderful moment with your saying of things! And please don’t look at me…no, don’t look at me!!!!”)
So we start the week with Dez going to a meaningless party, and end it with Bernice and the scarf man hobo enduring the sounds of silence. Okay. Is that it? We need Rosa to come back and have a crashing, thrashing, passionate filled reunion with Gunther. Blacked out panels and suggestive speech bubbles.
Interesting, Brd. My dad told me that during the silent film era many large theaters would at least have a piano player, who would play background music appropriate to the scenes.
If he likes silence, it doesn’t really follow that he’ll like silent people.
More and more, his actions lead me to conclude that he could be a vet with a closed head wound. Those guys ‘self medicate’ with booze as much as with other drugs. The booze or drugs can shut off the nightmares or recurring noise of a bomb blowing up, is what I’ve been told…
Could be that Bernice is actually attracted to him, and will willingly “take the next step” with him now, reasoning that his liking for silence means he won’t let anyone else know what happened.
Also ha ha ha!! – (“I think I’ll select this fine, refreshing beverage… [change drops, drink dispenses, Piro examines date on label]).. Oh, look, Bern! It has matured! It was a very good day, for this one!”)
Bernice is right. WINGS is amazing. (And by the way, they didn’t just call Clara Bow the “It” Girl because she made a movie called IT. Watch the film and see.)
Maybe he isn’t homeless. Maybe he comes from a home where there’s a lot of fighting and yelling. That could be why he likes quiet and looks for other places to sleep.
Hmm, hidden message Piro? Not interested, or just anti-social? Poor Bernice, she was all excited and wanted to talk. Piro you dog! Be nice to the poor girl!
The episode was called “Hush” A great one.“Can’t even scream, can’t even cry. The Gentlemen are coming by”“looking in windows, knocking on doors. They need to take seven and they might take yours”“Can’t call to Mom, can’t say a word. You’re gonna die screaming but you won’t be heard”
Look at LUANN AGAINN. The strip began to have longish story-lines with the drug-related sequence about Bernice and her infatuation with the handsome Derek. .There were many long sequences to follow, and they are what led to the great popularity of LUANN..Today sequences tend to be short, one week, then . . . CHOP!.Sometimes the unresolved issue is returned to. ,Often NEVER! .The odds are 4 to 1 that Monday will put us back to the warehouse (UGH !), or to Luann’s art teacher (YUCK !), or to something else unrelated and terminally dull.
A poster that proclaims ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE is on the wall right behind the couch the two occupy.,But it doesn’t show up in any of the later scenes..That could be the intended story here.
Piro could very well be a war vet who has experienced loud gunfire and shells blowing up…(damaging to the ears). We’ve only just now been provided with a small clue regarding his past life. I hope this arc will continue long enough to fill in a little more background on him before it ends.
Wings Trivia: It was the first ever Best Picture winner and was filmed here in San Antonio at Stinson Field, which is now a small municipal airfield known as Stinson Airport. It is also home to the Texas Air Museum. Click here to see a few of their exhibits.

Bernice, while you’re sitting there in silence he’s falling asleep! Say thanks for the flick & show him the door.

Before Bernice and Piro embark on any kind of romance, maybe he should take her out to dinner at his favorite restaurant:

So they were watching “Wings.” But that award was for 1927/28 as they split the years back then. And it wasn’t awarded until 1930.

Piro likes silence because it allows him to hear the little voices in his creepy brain that tell him to become a terrorist. Bernice should be careful.
