Arlo: Don't you ever miss that spontaneous nature of youth? Janis: What do you have in mind? Arlo: What? Nothing! Arlo: Besides, that is NOT spontaneity! Arlo: You can't do something stupid, just because you think I want to do something stupid! Janis: Boy, I have news for you!

Spontaneous stupidity: what separates the fun guys from the safe guys. Too bad all the fun guys end up turning into safe, guys provided they don’t end up in prison first.

You have to really work to achieve real stupidity…er you know relax to get there….er you know let loose, go with the flow…oh heck let’s just read the newspaper. (Start with little things first. Try one week of it. Call it “say what’s on your mind”.)

I too am a girl who did a lot of stupid things because of a guy. A lot has changed since Adam and Eve. :-)

It is not that youth is any more spontaneous, it is that youth has fewer boundaries.
People in our culture change as they get older. People have to make their schedule fit to those of others, particularly children and work. “Spontaneity” as represented here would interfere with those realities.
I was amazed to see the “spontaneity” in the retirees who gathered together annually for a couple of months at a Caribbean resort. They had no boundaries. Also, at that age, no children will result.

When you get older, it takes considerable planning to get spontaneity right.

This reminds me of the Pulitzer winning play by Albee, Seascape, which opens with an older couple discussing what they want to do with their lives. In their case a big surprise was just ahead.

Spontaneous stupidity is usually preceded by the words “Hey guys watch this!” or “Here, hold my beer a second!”

In my late forties, I came out of a super market with a shopping cart….There was a pretty good incline…..soooooo……Yup. I hopped on and rode the cart down the hill….I passed a guy who was doing his best not to laugh….It did occur to me that I was probably too old to do that, but why? What are the rules of shopping cart riding? Can you ride them in your twenties? Thirties? Should it be an Olympic sport?
