I think it’s time to change the text books to reflect the truth of American history. A history that not only includes the covetous nature of Europeans, but the attitude of the descendants of those Europeans where they believed they were intellectually superior.
Columbus completely destroyed an entire population on one of the islands. He also cut off the hands of little boys who did not bring him gold when there was no gold. So make him a hero if you wish, but he was really a piece of shxt.
Columbus describes, in the original ship’s log of the 1492 voyage, his first impressions of the Arawak indigenous natives he encountered. He describes them as childlike, gentle and generous, eager to give freely to others. He then notes how easily they will be able to be made into slaves. Columbus then notes how receptive they will be to conversion to Christianity. The Arawak would soon be all dead. Sounds like the Arawak could have taught Columbus far more about the teachings attributed to Jesus than Columbus could ever teach the Arawak.

8 major cities have abolished Columbus Day in favor of Indigenous People’s Day. I like Explorer’s Day better if we have to change it.

Why not name it First Nations Day. They are the first ones to settle the land.

But the others either came when their discovery got forgotten (Vikings), or kept it to themselves (like the French fishermen.)
