I was a NAPA auto parts dealer..years ago..You took the make and model…looked it up on the book..and finally asked..“Do you have that filter to show me…dear?”..Somebody brought a supposed air cleaner for a 1972 Chevy..It was actually for a diesel powered Street Sweeper..Al right lets start over here…shaking my head..and I might have said“Madame..would you care to get a new set of sparkplugs for your corset?”

I was in the retail power equipment business from 1963-1990, and in distribution for several years after that. Anyway, we serviced hundreds of pieces of equipment each year and sold parts for many DIY customers.

It always amused us when a customer would come in looking for a specific part and would be unable to provide model, make, and year! In some cases, a few questions would solve the mystery, and we would send the customer home with the correct part. The exception was the customer who wanted a new governor spring for their machine.

They would often respond with, “They’re all the same, just give me the damn spring!”

For this situation, we had a governor spring from a Caterpillar engine that was about 12" long, 1" in diameter, and made out of 8 gauge spring wire. We would pull this “fits all” governor spring out and lay it on the counter and say, “Here you go! You said all governor springs are the same!”

Of course, the spring they needed was about 3/16" in diameter and 2" long…

The parts man’s prayer:I work behind the parts counter of a lawnmower dealer’s store,Sometimes I’m called a genius, sometimes I’m called much more,But I can tell you this right nowAnd I’d grin from ear to ear,If my customers would only tell meThe model make and year…
