Tell your son what my dad told me, my brother and my cousin: “Finish school first, them get a job.” It worked.

A friend did that. Opened an account with a regular pocket money transfer plus whatever the kid put on it, gave a card… and put a 0 € overdraft on it. After the first three times the kid found that his card didn’t work (once when inviting his sweetheart) he learned to budget.

My teens have what’s called a teen money card. There are no overdraft fees and I only put money on them when they do well in school and do their chores – nothing’s been on them for awhile.

My mum used to say, “Save your allowance”. The girls and I used to play Bank with a kitchen chair (the teller’s window), some Monopoly money, and an old check book. They caught on fairly quickly.

sure, you have to learn how to manage money since you are young. Start by learning that money does not appear from nowhere, so if you want to have money available in your debit card, you have to get money first
