Rooster: Cock-a-doodle-don't!
Adam: Did I hear your rooster right this morning?
Marcia: Yes, sorry. He's been depressed for a long while.
Adam: What's his problem?
Marcia: Cubs fan.
It has nothing to do with the Cubs’ record. Coming out of the All-Star Break they’re in the middle of their division, and there’s still a lot of baseball to play. I’ve got a good feeling this year, I really do… (A real Cubs fan’s heart doesn’t break until mathematical elimination is reached. We believe in miracles. We saw one first-hand, in 1969, although of course that one went against us…)
No, the rooster hasn’t been the same since they put lights in at Wrigley. He’s a morning person, after all, and can’t stay up for night games.
(This explains the satellite dish, by the way. It’s so Chanticleer here can get WGN.)
As long as there are sell-out crowds at Wrigley Field when the Cubs are in last place, the owners will never shell out the dough needed to buy good players. Why spend money for the best when the fans will support the worst, year in and year out? If you want a good team, Cubs fans, boycott the stadium until they get some decent players!
My understanding is that Cubs roster decisions have been based on the lines of “Wow! We found ourselves with a great player! Let’s trade him for TWO “good” ones…”
I grew up watching the Cubs games on WGN–including double-headers. (My Mom was a big fan and it was contagious.) I moved to the Cincinnati area in the 70s and, because team members weren’t so loyal any more, I became a fan of the Reds–but still loving my Cubbies. I have Ernie Banks’ and others autographs on my program from a game played in Cincinnati in the 70s when I was a rare Cubbies fan.
It is interesting to see the names of people i read on the political toons in this different context. My email address is actually “CubsFan@…”
The Cubs have the third highest payroll in baseball only behind the Yankees and Red Sox. I saw them lose 2 games 2 weeks ago and won’t go back too often and jinx them. Marmol blew another one today.
