Let’s be honest – if we all waited “until we were ready” no one would be married.

I tend to side with Phil on this. My family had always been too critical for my liking and I resented their suggestions as to how I should live my life. I’ve written off my three sisters, haven’t spoken with them for over five years, and never plan to speak to them again. I’m a basically good person, never criticized their lifestyles…..just got fed up with them after my parents passed and want nothing more to do with them.

People are too thin-skinned. Just smile and say “thanks for the advice” and then do your own thing. Just because they “suggest” it, doesn’t mean you must follow it.

Phil has proposed to Georgia. He’s made the commitment to get married, now he’s complaining about his sister commenting about his impending nuptials? This man needs to grow up.

Egrayj: I have a dear friend who is in the same situation you are. She has 6 surviving siblings, and 5 of them think they have the right to dictate her life to her. They have treated her like a slave all her life (she’s 65) and they even managed to cut her out of her inheritance from her mother. When she finally got her back up about 5 years ago and told them where to put it, they cut her off completely. She is better off now, and she sees it clearly. It’s a good thing she lives in CA and they are all in PA. Her husband is still celebrating the fact that she has cut ties with them – he’s seen all along how much they hurt her.

There is one person to blame for all of Phil’s problems: Phil. If he gets Georgia pregnant out of wedlock, he is going to have a lot more involvement in his life from more people than just Elly: John, Michael, Elizabeth and the four grandparents of his child, for starters.

Phil made himself ready for a relationship by cohabiting with Georgia, whether he likes it or not. Sexuality establishes an emotional bond between a woman and a man. By not marrying Georgia, Phil is being disrespectful to her, and is treating her not as a woman, but as a piece of property. People are human beings, Phil, not property. There was a war fought on American soil over that very issue.

Nobody in my family has gone around telling any of the others what to do. We’re all too busy living our own lives to waste time trying to control others..But nobody smokes in my house… because that’s my life, not theirs.
