Not sure if this was the point, but my take on it was the principal was concerned about what the coming school year would bring, and the responsibility he and his teachers had of molding and teaching young minds, and the trust put in them by the parents of said young ones.
I don’t think anything official was said, I just figured it had to be about more than just a man and a leaf.
Still not sure what these strips are leading to. In all three so far, the basic theme, whether it is a slug, Family Circus or H&G pictured here, is Spaetzel spills coffee, Frazz cleans it up.
Mr. Spaetzle needs a briefcase or something similar so he won’t have to be distracted by papers and folders getting away from under his arm. Then he won’t spill his coffee and everyone wins.
If I remember the story correctly, as Hansel and Gretel dropped the breadcrumbs to mark their trail, birds came and ate the crumbs, precisely what Frazz is doing with the paper towels.

Hansel or Gretel? Jef has a mustache and gray hair on both—just in case. LOL.

Oh, good grief! Give it a rest! This ‘pun’ has been dragged on for about four days too many.

A theme week? Come on, Frazz, you’re better than this. This is something Marvin would do.

Mr. Spaetzle was definitely never a NCO in the Army. I can direct Privates without spilling a drop.

Same gag, but is it a different day in Frazzland? Dr. Spaetzle has a different coffee cup.
