Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for December 18, 2015
Transcript:
Ralph: Hey, Phoebe. Phoebe: Oh, hey, um... Ralph: Ralph. I'm your "Secret Santa". Phoebe: No way. How can that be? You're not Max or Dakota! Ralph: You're welcome. Phoebe: I mean, I know there are other kids in the class, but I've been trying to keep things simple.

Phoebe is being meta: “How can my Secret Santa be a non-established character?”

It’s called a “fourth wall breach” – the fourth wall being the space which separates actors from their audience. A breach occurs when the actors address the audience or make it clear they know they’re in a play, as Phoebe is doing here when she is essentially speaking for her author and describing a plot device.

This is kinda like how there are twnty-ish kids in Bart Simpson’s class, but only seven have ever been named.
(In case you’re wondering, they’re Bart, Nelson, Milhouse, Sherri, Terri, and Wendell.)

I’m just curious here, it’s been about a week since I posted the pattern for my “Morse Code” scarfs and while I’m sitting her reading my comics and working on my newest scarf I’m wondering if anyone else is giving the pattern a try; just wondering.

It’s about time we got a little ethnic diversity. We still need an Asian and a Native American character though.

Yay, increased representation! I kinda thought Sam was at least somewhat Asian, though. (“East Asian” not Indian—I know some folks get persnickety about needlessly classifying people by skin colour)
