It’s been roughly 50 years that I’ve heard that as well, and still don’t see how my eating my food, or not eating it, will affect another person half way around the world. Do I send him my leftovers? Do I buy less food and spend the difference on charity? And along with it a brief note of explanation:

Dear foreign person: I was going to buy another burger for $5.00, but here, go to your local McDonalds and get yourself a Big Mac, on me.

I got a variation of that expression. I was born just as WWII started, and by the time I was on table food, rationing was in full swing. I ate what was in front of me, and if I wanted seconds I was told “You’ve had enough”. Later, it was “You know children in Europe are still going hungry. Eat and be grateful.”

As a kid, I would have more than happy to send those people my liver and broccoli.

My mother always cited the starving children in Armenia to get me to clean my plate. Even as a little kid, I could never figure out how that would help.

On another note: the above cartoon panel is an absolutely true picture of the dining room at the Golden Corral. Went once, lost my appetite, never been back.

One of my favorite lines in the movie “Crazy Rich Asians” is the mom telling her kids to eat all their chicken nuggets because kids are going hungry in the United States.
