So why doesn’t Grandpa still wear it? Most rug wearers don’t seem to notice the difference.

When grandpa is gone, they will have a Christmas tradition to remember him by. How touching!

I imagine Pearl got tired of the wretched thing, grabbed it, and tossed it away from Earl. Because it was during the Christmas season, it landed on the tree. Thus a tradition was born.
