If His Highness does have 16 kings, it seems to me a steady progress of pawns across the board could lead to several checkmates. Eight queens would be a different story.

The serf got rooked.

but the serf doesn’t have a king, and a pawn can’t be promoted to a king, so how can he lose?

The pawn’s have the advantage… Remember the kings can only move 1 square at a time. They can’t castle , no rooks.

Chess emulates life. The Queen is the most powerful and the King is always being attacked.

The pawns can move in such a way as to protect all the squares in front of them. Since a king can never move into check, the pawns can force a stalemate. This would be an interesting game to try.
