We drove by kids walking home from school the other day. Some were wearing shorts and some in short sleeved shirts with no coat. It was 28 degrees out and snow everywhere.
For those in thier 80s and beyond, short pants were worn by boys, called “knickers” in the US. They buttoned below the knee over long socks. Men of that era rarely would wear shorts, unless they were a bathing suit
I’m taking it that the wind isn’t blowing where Earl and the other man are sitting. That would lower the temperature. The way Earl has his arms folded makes me think he’s cold, at least on his upper body. But I know from recent experience how heat from the sun on a sunny January day in southeast Michigan can feel warm despite the cold air nearby. That heat from the sun even warms car interiors on sunny January days here. At least raises the interior temperature, so we don’t turn our car heat up as far.

Living in western Washington, I find it confusing too why wear short pants in the winter if you’re not jogging or doing any other sport.

Actually Earl has a great idea, soaking up some Vit D in the winter helps chase away the blues…

All those years in Florida and now here in Ecuador, shorts and flipflops are the uniform of the day – no matter what age you are.

I only wear long pants in the winter because I get sick and tired of people commenting on my shorts.

My kids always give me a hard time when I call them “short pants”. They say, “it’s ‘shorts’, geeze dad, what’s wrong with you?”

I never wear shorts either. I wear leggings.

I think I last wore shorts in the early ’90s. Believe me, no one is missing anything great.
