Hereâs a few lines from an old song, done by Doris Day, Perry Como, and Iâm sure others â available on YouTube:
I love you a bushel and a peckA bushel and a peck and a hug around the neckA hug around the neck and a barrel and a heapA barrel and a heap and Iâm talkinâ in my sleep
I went to elementary school in the 50âs, and I remember being taught about pecks. (Itâs about two gallons.) But I have to admit that I have never, outside of those classes, had any reason to refer to a peck or in any way make use of the knowledge. It was a hangover, even back then, from the days in which the U.S. was an agricultural society. I suppose someone thought it was important that we know what it was, event though everyone who had any reason to know already knew. .Watterson, in fact, didnât know what a peck was, either, since itâs a unit of volume, not weight.(I say didnât know, because Iâm sure hundreds of people have corrected him by now.)
Thatâs why smart countries went Metric years ago. Actually the USA did in the 1860âs, but we still allow the idiotic sold systems to be used in commerce.
âȘâ«Oh the barrel, half barrel, gallon, half gallon, pint pot, half a pint, gill, half a gill, quarter gill, nipperkin and a round bowlHereâs good luck, good luck, to the barley mowâȘâ«
There was a song, whose lyrics I partially know:*âI love you a bushel and a peckBushel and a peckBushel and a peck*I love you a bushel and a peck????â*VERY catchy tune and deep lyrics
Itâs still common practice to report harvest yield, regardless of the crop, in âbushels per acreâ. The capacity/volume measure is preferred because the weight can vary quite a bit, depending on the % of moisture content.

A peck: something you give your aunt because your mother tells you to.

A bushelâs a unit of volume. Is this Calvinâs mistake, or Billâs?

A peck of oysters is not a unit of weight, but is always welcome!

What the peck?
cocavan11 about 9 years ago
Itâs not a measure of weight. Itâs a measure of volume. Odd that Watterson didnât know that.

Itâs no less confusing than the alleged ânew mathâ

A peck is equal to four farthings per furlong.

Who gives a peck!?!
Carl R about 9 years ago
Over the years Iâve encountered many obscure measurement units. For example, how many fathoms in a league? How many rods in a furlong?

Seems like pretty intense stuff for a six-year-old (unless I am getting his age wrong). I was leaning my addition subtraction then.
