I don’t get it. Why would Kevin be feared? Hated, Supported, Popular, Notorious, Controversial yes, but why would he be Feared?
On a side note and just for the record:
Yes, it’s wrong of Muslims to give death threats or vandalise property for whatever reasons, especially for cartoons/comics. They should be made responsible for such unjustified acts.
Nonetheless, it’s also wrong and callous, to hurt sentiments by desecrating personalities that they hold dear.
i’ve noticed that most of the people that follow this ‘toon on a regular basis haven’t been commenting since the artist took a vacation.
maybe they’re only following a certain story line and not everything mr. miller has to entertain us…
I think the “While You Wait,” part is what makes him frightening – if you’re waiting with him, you’re a target, too!
For my part, God (by whatever name you choose to call) is big enough to take the irreverence and/or humor of those who choose to be irreverent and/or funny about God.
It’s a big world with lots of people who believe lots of things, and anyone whose religion cannot live within that world without taking the jabs probably has a false religion.
In other words, people will always mock - your reaction to it is what’s most telling.
myming: personally, I only comment when I feel I have something to say regarding that day’s comic… but I come everyday to check them out and LOL most! :D
Here is what is ironic, the muslims claim that any image of their prophet is idolatry (No idea why they don’t have images of Allah?), yet in the mid-east most of them have pictures of their ayatollahs/imams in their dwellings.
A bit of history here… this cartoon first ran 4 years ago, satirizing the hoopla over cartoons by Islamic radicals at the time. When it ran in the Straight Times, which is the biggest paper in Malaysia, the Malaysian government shut down the paper for over week, demanding an apology from the paper for printing it. They did not apologize, as there was nothing to apologize for. It was really just an excuse by the government to exercise their muscle over the media there. The paper was allowed to reopen a week later.
So I chose to run it again, as the issue still hasn’t gone away, being revived recently. Let’s see what happens this time.
The day a satirist is afraid to satirize glaring idiocy, then it’s time to find a new profession.
exoticdoc, you mean like this? From South Park website:
“In the 14 years we’ve been doing South Park we have never done a show that we couldn’t stand behind. We delivered our version of the show to Comedy Central and they made a determination to alter the episode. It wasn’t some meta-joke on our part. Comedy Central added the bleeps. In fact, Kyle’s customary final speech was about intimidation and fear. It didn’t mention Muhammad at all but it got bleeped too. We’ll be back next week with a whole new show about something completely different and we’ll see what happens to it.”
I remember when any picture of a Muslim was forbidden as it was supposed to capture the soul of the individual. Tourists had their cameras ripped out of their hands and destroyed. I have never traveled in Arab countries, but just a few years ago I saw an advisory telling tourists they must ask Muslim subjects for permission to photograph them. Usually the permission would be granted after paying a fee. Amazing how a little money can change a person’s religious views.

Because, exoticdoc2, doing a caricature undermines the whole point of the satire here.
And it wasn’t the South Park people who were to blame, it was the network.

Wait a second… I just had a thought (and I need to share it before it dies of loneliness).
Is a ‘fatwa’ the product of too many sheiks? If we cut back on the sheiks, can we reduce down to a skinnywa?
(Though we don’t want to cut back on Sheik Yerbouti. The world needs more Zappa tributes.)

exoticdoc2 said, shytimes2. So the question then remains, how do you decide what is right and wrong if you will not be told anything?
If you rely on other people telling you what’s right or wrong, then They can mislead you and have you commit sins for Them because They say it’s okay.
Learn to think for yourself and don’t let Them control your life through misinformation and misused scripture.
You should be smart enough to figure out right and wrong on your own, and not be lazy enough to let others do it for you.
ellisaana Premium Member about 14 years ago
Well said Coyoty. First, one must learn to think.
Yet, therein lies the crux of the argument.
One side says, ‘think for yourself and you will be able to make a responsible choice. ”
The other side says, “Given the choice to think, you are destined to choose wrong.”
