Is Carla making an “appearance”? I thought she was the strip’s version of Vera from Cheers or Maris from “Frasier”, often referenced, sometimes heard but never seen.

It’s possible that Ray and Carla’s mother arranged for the Ruiz’s to adopt their daughter when she was born. This happened in the movie Juno where Juno met and agreed to her babies adoptive parent(s) while she was still pregnant and before the baby was born. In this kind of situatiion the baby is basically adopted in the hospital and the adoptive parents take the baby home from the hospital just like they were the birth parents.
