Meemaw: The dinghy swayed and floated on the gentle waves. The storm had passed...soon it would be morning. The Earl of Penguins had traveled farther than any flightless bird...using his flippers and his courage. Guardian: She's good! I'm getting a little sleepy myself!

I can recite many passages of “Goodnight Moon” and Dr, Seuss’s “The Sleep Book” and “McElligot’s Pool” without any reference to the actual verses. Also, passages from “The Book House” books, especially volumes 1 and 2. Read to your kids, often.

WOW Someone else who read “The Happy Hollisters” I loved that series. My Mom and Dad would read to me, and to each other, though Mom read to Dad more than the other way around. When I got older I got to read to them. When I got older Mom decided that One book a night would get read, “War and Peace” for my Dad and "The Little House "series for me. This stopped when I got confuses and thought The Ingles Family had gotten involved in the Russian War, that had somehow spread out of Russia, through Canada and into Illinois.

My dad used to read me Kipling. I knew “The Jungle Book” and “Just So Stories” really well by the time I started Kindergarten.

My mother used to buy us a Little Golden Book from the grocery store every two or three weeks. “The Pokey Little Puppy,” “Saggy Baggy Elephant”, and “Pantaloon” were three of my favorites. I have them still on the shelf, along with Cherry Ames. . .haven’t read “The Happy Hollisters;” I’ll have to get them from the library. I did just discover the “Swallows and Amazons” series—cute adventure series for kids 7-10 or so, written in the 1940s or ’50s. . .
P.S. Not even my mother’s reading could get me through “War and Peace;” the closest I’ve come is the Cliff Notes. . .;)

My grandmother read to me each night from a series of books, each a different type. I especially liked the mythology stories. They still are relevant as so often there is reference to one of the Roman or Greek gods.

I am reading an unabridged copy of the *Wizard of Oz" to my 5 year old grand daughter. One chapter a day. The book contains the first five novels of the series! We are loving it!

Of course Meemaw is good at that. She has had a lot of practice.

Remember reading to my mother when I was 7 years old. In fact, first book I got from the library and read was Dr. Seuss’ Cat in the Hat.

You know you’re a good reader if you put the Guardian Angel to sleep, too!
