For collies, the distinctive markings (the forehead, I think it was) only occur in the male. Were there books or radio of Lassie that pre-dated the TV/movies – such that they needed to keep the obviously-female name/identity?
Speaking of TV and Movie dogs (and remembering what my avatar is). Do any of you remember a movie called “The Littlest Hobo”? I remember going to the drive-in with the whole family when I was little to see that. All I remember was he was a German Shepherd dog riding trains trying to get back somewhere.
Lassie was based on a book by Eric Knight. The dog(s) who played Lassie on the movies and TV was/were all male, because males were supposed to be easier to handle.
