Rat: I heard you invited some women over for a big dance party last weekend. How'd it go?
Goat: Not well. I don't know what it was. Maybe the music.
Rat: What'd you play?
Goat: Bruce Springsteen's 'Nebraska'. Is crying common at dance parties?
Ah, Goat! Didnât you listen to the music before throwing the party? Havenât you heard about Starkweather and Fugate?Geesh. I donât thing you could find more downer-music if you tried!
âWell, Rat, âNebraskaâ seemed like a perfectly good opening song at the time. Excuuuuuuuuuuse me for not knowing the first danged thing about music, or the way the world works in general! Oh, well. Back to the olâ drawing board!âAah, donât feel too bad, Goat. All ideas seem good at the time; itâs really too bad that they only rarely get off the ground! On second thought, maybe itâs just as well anyway!
The Beatles had their âWhite Album.â I always thought of Nebraska as Springsteenâs âWhite Trash Album.â Of course he staked a great deal of his career on giving voice to the inarticulate, and whatâs wrong with that?
