Once it was recognized that those fuzzy spots in the skies were galaxies just like our Milky Way, the odds that other intelligent life exists in the universe shot way up. On the other hand, at the distances and time scales involved, none of us are ever going to encounter any others.
When the antarctic ice melts enough we will discover the Gate and then we will be able to travel to other worlds.
Until then we can put put put to moon, mars and maybe another planet.
