Sure looks like bracket fungus. Although I had no idea that’s what it was really called. Thanks, I learn something new every day. See Mom? Reading the comics is educational!
Good morning, everyone! (thanks for the personalized greeting, Tanya :-))
Cute characters, but I don’t get it either… I thought maybe the birds in the distance were vultures that took off after he woke up… and yet it looks like feathers or barnacles on his shell…
Not necessarily seagulls. They are too far in the distance to see. Only thing that suggests seagulls as opposed to the birds is the sand. So, barnacles are a possibility, but after I rejected feathers (which admittedly is what they appear to be on first glance) I immediately opted for tree fungus. Since either barnacles or tree fungus would fit the gag, I wouldn’t say the strip is all that unsuccessful–except with those unfortunate enough to have not had much experience with either one.

Good morning, Everyone…..sooooooo
John is really growing feathers….or……who is playing “darts”???

Since barnacles would need to be under water, I’m betting bracket fungus (tree-stump mushrooms).
ksoskins over 14 years ago
I think being covered with barnacles is a pretty good indication that John’s been in the same place too long.

It’s not a very successful cartoon if it’s that hard to decipher. Disappointing.

Agreed, not easy to decipher. My thought was that if he’s stuck around long enough to star evolving flight feathers in order to get him headed south…

How come “not easy to decipher” buy a larger screen :-))))

Because it’s only on one side, my vote is for tree fungi.
shakeswilly over 14 years ago
They are polypores, usually found on logs and trees; can take years to grow.

I didn’t get it either until I read a post about tree fungus…yup, that’s what it’s supposed to be…now it makes sense.

Those are toadstools, which are a poisonus type of mushroom. They’re not very well drawn which is probably why there is so much confusion.

I think the older readers would readily recognize the growths as tree fungus. You youngsters should get out more and get some experience with nature.

Nab Do you know why the mushroom got invited to all the parties?
He was a fungi…
Also, I knew a guy who got bitten by a tick and a fruit fly…
He got Lemon-Lime Disease…
And Fer Lefer If the birds come in from the sea, they’re sea-gulls. If they come in from the bay, they’re … well, Bay-Gulls.
