My mother is going through this stage with my daughters. The last time they spent the night with my parents, my mother told them that they were too old to sleep with stuffed animals (they’re 11 and 13), but still gave them toys from Blues Clues and Sesame Street.
Interesting how all of the main characters introduced after Charlie Brown, Patty, Violet, and Shermy will be “aged up” later (including Snoopy). I think Frieda is the next character who doesn’t debut as a toddler, and that won’t be until the early 60s.
That was a huge hit at the time. I’m sure it was an extremely catchy song and probably the part of many pop culture jokes. Looks like Schulz got caught up in the trend.
I’ve been following this throw-back strip since they started it up about a year and half ago, and I can’t for the life of me figure out what the heck happened to Charles Schultz to make him change these characters so much over the next 8 or 10 years. Not that the transitional early-to-mid-60’s strip wasn’t funny and interesting, just that it seems nonsensical in hindsight. May his biography sheds some light on this?
A while back I saw “A teenager is someone who is too young to do most of what they want to do, and too old to do the rest.” Apparently that applies to Lucy here, too.

No wonder Lucy ends up hating people when she gets older. This strip explains a lot

You’re confusing her! No wonder she gets emotionally unstable in her later years.

Is there even an inkling of a joke here? I don’t see one.

Yea. I can’t figure out what happened to the right age. Suddenly I’m too old for all the stuff I was too young for.

No wonder Lucy grew up to be crabby!

Violet later developed into (if anything) a less compassionate person than Lucy herself!

And soon, Lucy will be big enough to host the “crab-in” Violet and Patty attend…

What year did Schulz move Lucy to the same age as CB?
