I think we can assume these are Snoopyâs thoughts rather than a verbalisation â he is only âtalkingâ to himself, after all. I presume it just took Schulz a little while to work out the best way to show it.
Snoopy is beginning his evolution from common everyday beagle to WW1 flying ace, ice skater, Joe Cool etc etc etc. At some point Schulz decided to lock in the human characters but experimented with Snoopyâs appearance and personality almost continuously. Whatever his motivation, it certainly worked with Snoopy eventually becoming a superstarâŠ. unrecognizable from the original.
Iâve always wondered why Schulz decided not to do Snoopy as being able to think like a human (okay, much better than most humans!) in the TV cartoons and the movies. The best of the animated shows were excellent (indeed, classic) and they do work quite well with Snoopy merely making noises. Yet in the comic strip itself, Snoopyâs thoughts added so muchâŠâŠ.
I would LOVE my dogâs life. Fed with the best food. The best place by the fire on a cold day. Trips to the woods and the beach on sunny days and lots of toys to play with. Surrounded by people who love him and do everything for him to keep him well and happy. Itâs a dogâs life,eh? Still you do that for them when you love them so much.

This dog will do a lot. Be a WWI flying ace, hit 700+ home runs, be a Beagle Scout leader, become Head Beagle etc. The world is your oyster, Snoop

Actually, the Sunday comics for Peanuts didnât start until 1952. So, maybe, thatâs why its messed up.
