Makes perfect sense to me. Unless you’re in a tournament, there’s no need to follow “official” rules. As long a everybody agrees to and plays by the same rules, then it’s good.
Although in some cases, it’s still not a good idea. Like all of the various house rules people have invented for Monopoly. These rules tend to be the reason why games never end – they (in the name of fairness) create situations where it is nearly impossible for one player to press his lead and force everybody else out of the game.
That’s kind of the way my husband & I played tennis. Boundaries? What are boundaries? It hit the net? So what? As long as the ball remained “in play” it was all good. The second the ball actually hit the ground…round over.
The only childrens game with rules that must NEVER be violated is Kill The Man With The Ball. (Of course, it has so many nuances of strategy and tactics that most children don’t play it these days……….)

It’s kind of like pierogies; no matter how you spell it, it’s correct.

I’m pretty sure it’s okay to creatively make up different rules and still have fun. Ever heard of Calvinball?

But they’re right. There are no official rules to games like that.

Why does the colorist draw Charlie Brown’s shirt red? It’s supposed to be yellow.

However you play it, CB, don’t let Patty in. She will take all your marbles.

My brother played a Chinese mandarin in a school play and had the line, “It is the custom and therefore must be correct”!
