Caulfield: I was wondering why school lets out in the summer, but I didn't guess it was because Mrs. Olsen hates bugs.
Frazz: I don't think she has that much pull.
what about test scores, common core, and summer brain drain? experts say that american education is such poor quality, that we should put kids in school year-round. that test scores are abysmal, that childhood obesity is an epidemic, that home life for many kids is unhealthy and at times dangerous.
There’s a show called Adam Ruins Everything that explains why schools are closed in summer and the summer brain drain. There’s a whole series of them explaining everything from eating out at restaurants, voting, sex, death, marriage rituals, and daylight savings time.
I have the sure-fire answer for the abysmal test scores, appaling obesity rates, and overall academic malaise that has become endemic.
Just lower the accepted standards. Math — if the student can tell that 7 and 9 are different (no need to extrapolate as to how they are different…) then s/he will be regarded as “proficient”. Same for History — George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Alan Dershowitz were guys from the past. Science — well, we all know Science is tough, so let’s just let that one go. English — just as simple. English is the language spokened by many Americans. What else does we knead to no?
Heck, with this solution, Americans will be able to rise to the very top of academia in no time a’tol!
Summer vacation started with the need for the kids to be at home to help with the harvest on the family farm. In a lot of places, this is no longer relevant, but summer vacation is now so traditional that attempts to do away with it are doomed from the start. Also, there are a surprising number of schools that aren’t air conditioned, but fewer and fewer places where the summer heat doesn’t make it important to have, especially if kids are going to concentrate on learning. Just ask anyone who ever had summer school.

What is she hitting it with and is she making the proper prayers to the Insect Gods?

Caulfield has been bugging her all year. But she would be in big trouble if she were to treat him that way.

If they don’t bite or sting, I don’t even think about them…Unless they’re cool and interesting looking…

I wish that he had included a bug in the middle panel. Just a little spot would have sufficed.
