The first time my parents watched their new TV, my mum suddenly turned to my dad and said “Russell, it’s broken already!” They’d drifted off, and slept through the signoff and the National anthem, and all they had was static.
There are 2 reasons to stay on 24/7:1: you can run more ads and get the income from them.2: big powerful transmitters last longer if they’re left on 24/7.Oh, yes, 3: if you leave the air people will channel surf and not come back to your station.
This may be the first time this strip has truly made me laugh. Don’t get me wrong, it’s often amusing, and I chuckle. But this one got a belly laugh out of me.
Infomercials can be very entertaining.Who can forget Ron Popeil’s spray-on hair from the 90’s ? SCTV parodied it with a skit featuring spray-on socks.Very funny!
Very few channels sign off. They never turn off the transmitter anymore, because it’s too costly to bring it back up in the morning. So even in the old days, they’d run test patterns after the end of programming. But today, all the broadcasters run paid programming (typically infomercials) during the non-profitable hours, which includes overnight. And sometimes even during what I’d consider normal viewing hours on holiday weekends.

I watch TV and my IPad at the same time. With the inane content on TV I don’t miss anything.

The only time I ever saw Johnny Carson was when I had to get up to feed a newborn baby!

When I was a kid, I got to stay up “half-past Milton Berle”. When the Texico Man cam out, I had to go to bed. Oh, the days of live TV!
