Frazz by Jef Mallett for June 25, 2016
Transcript:
Caulfield: Last day of school needs to be on a Thursday. Frazz: So first day of vacation can't seem like just another Saturday? Caulfield: Yeah, we'll go with that. Frazz: Or just that it would get you out 24 hours sooner? Caulfield: I said let's go with the more philosophical-sounding one.

Don’t you have any friends your own age, Frazz? This is sad.

I am fifty something… I hang out with friends from 2 to 98 yrs old. I do all kind of activities with them including pretending, climbing trees, running, skateboarding, windsurfing, kitesurfing, barbecueing, having a beer, having a conversation, etc… It depends on who I am with at the moment.

In today’s overly protective society, a janitor climbing a tree with a student would be fired.

Someone said, ‘We become truly adult when we regain the sense of wonder we enjoyed as children.’Sometimes sitting in a quiet corner reading a familiar children’s story, playing pick-up-sticks with a small person, coloring in a book of birds or flowers, or just listening to the many questions a child offers while on a walk helps us regain a momentary taste of the wonders that we left behind when we began to concentrate on the ‘real world.’Personally, at age 80, I still miss that earlier me.

My son’s school district let out on a Thursday this year. He was excited to realize that Friday was the first day of summer break.

I miss the earlier me too. I was late for the dentist last week and had to sit in the office for an extra hour…

I have outlived my Biblical allotment, but recently when the 12-year-old next door was out shooting hoops by himself, I went out and challenged him to a game of h.o.r.s.e. Of course, he beat me soundly, but the laughter and fun gave each of us a slightly better day.
