I don’t mind that my husband enjoys watching football, and if he wanted friends over to watch that would be fine as well. If he wanted me to play waitress and cook, that would not be fine. Anne needs to just let Steve and friends to fend for themselves and go do something she enjoys!
Football ruined my marriage, after years of seeing him laying on the sofa week after week watching tv and not doing anything else, I left. Best thing I ever did. What a way to waste time and a life.
aussiephoenix–there is a Canadian Football League, and they play a game very much like US football. There are some differences in the rules, but it’s much more similar than, say, Australian football. You may recall Doug Flutie, who was a successful college quarterback in the US, played a couple seasons in the NFL but was considered “too short to see over the offensive line,” and ended up with a fairly successful career in Canadian football.
ocean17: Your comment about “giant walrus rut season” is going to haunt me forever. Ugh!
Anne’s problem is that she thinks she’s entertaining guests, and therefore she has to be the good hostess. In truth, the guys would be just as happy if she plunked a cooler full of beer next to the couch and put a couple bowls of greasy salty snacks on the coffee table. They’re not coming over to be “entertained”; they’re coming over to stare at giant walrus rut season on the tube.
I get tired of the sterotype that women don’t like football and all that BS! I have been a die hard football fan since the tender age of 5, learned all about it watching with my dad. I’m in my 50’s now, and still a die hard football fan!
puddleglum: You have the correct answer! The men don’t so much want to be served while watching football.
It is the women who want (or think the guys expect) to serve the men while watching football. Too often they would rather her stay away, or watch with them, instead of always interrupting, asking “what else he wants her to get him.”
I learned to enjoy and appreciate football playing in the marching band in high school. When “the guys” assemble to watch, I join in. If someone wants a refill on snacks or beverage, my response is “yes, please, me too” LOL.
It’s important to remember this strip is virtually all re-runs from 30 years ago. Quite a bit of it is now very dated. Women waiting on men while they watch football is a good example of this, and so was the not funny week on Ellie’s inability to balance her checkbook.

I was going to say this servile wifey attitude dates back to the 1980s, and then I realized that in the 1980s it dated back to the 1950s.

just being buzy elsewhere will make the guys get their own food…. that’s why most tv watching areas are near the BBQ pit.
Clean-up is also the guys responsibility….no other cooking till the kitchen is clean.
all women need to do is just set the rules and all else falls in place.

sori to hear that AZLILSIS! but i agree with the others, i’d let the men get their own food, while i’d go chill with my bff of sis.

If you think you might like the game, go sit down and watch, if someone asks you to get some thing to eat or drink, calmly tell him, “It’s your turn”.
Else, there is allot of good advice in this thread.

@JanCinVV: Thanks for the help yesterday. (Re. Steve)
@Magasek: Yes, you saw what I was thinking. I was asleep. I realized my mistake when I read today’s strip. (Anne, not Connie)

this arc had very little relevance in 1980 and utterly none today.

I almost saw a touchdown, but I mostly saw ads for hamburgers, movies, and dress pants.
