Now, the school sends a list with the specific items you need to buy. If a family is short on money, there are places that will give you free school supplies for the kids, and backpacks. The items are donated every year at this time. So, if you too love to shop for school supplies and breath in that new pencil smell, here’s your chance! Find a church or organization that that gives out the supplies, and donate. Backpacks are especially fun to shop for. There are so many different kinds and sizes. Kids love them.
Speaking of sniffing things,I had a teacher in grade 4( 1963) whose idea of discipline was to make the offender sit under her desk for a spell.Need I say more?
I remember the pepper-minty smell (and taste) of white glue most, but reading others’ comments brings back the scents of pink erasers and writing tablets, too.
Back to school time in my house, as a kid, was greeted with cheers and huzzahs, but also, weeping and gnashing of teeth. The former – my folks… The latter – my brother and me !
Wow. Today’s strip is causing group flashbacks! And I always loved a good Pink Pearl eraser. Not for the smell, just because they erased things without tearing the paper to shreds.
70 years ago; I remember how excited I was to actually get a brand newbox of CRAYOLAS! Also; remember the BIG CHIEF tablets? They are probably considered politically incorrect now.
SDSillyCyclistOur culture shock on Canadian schools involved terms like Duo-Tang and constructions like “grade four”. For our kids, it was also learning which words were “er” and which were “re”, and which “or” endings were “our” instead; or that “socials” were social studies, not a formal recreational event. As the son said, “they spell long and talk short”. We were in BC, not Ontario, so they missed grade 13. (In Texas, I was in the last class graduating from the eleventh grade.

Back to school shopping was the best part of this time of year. That and getting to see your classmates again.

I had spiral paper notebooks with The Chief on the front, and a picture of a warrior. Loved the smell of new crayons.
