By now she’d been pulling this stunt enough times, that it’s a wonder she could introduce it on this occasion as a ‘great idea.’ Sure, Lucy- it only just occurred to you.
The only time that Charlie Brown ever got to kick that football, was when Snoopy turned him invisible, and while Lucy insists that it didn’t happen, Charlie Brown was happy to have finally kicked that ball.
Since this was a Sunday strip I’m presuming it was the original colors and not re-colored, but that second-to-last panel was a lot less subtle than Schulz tended to be. (In the colorized dailies, often angry characters are colored so over-the-top red that it lessens the effect instead of adding to it. I wish the dailies would be black and white the way Schulz did them way back when.)
He has every right not to trust you Lucy, and you know it. Which is why you resort to tears to get him to fall for your tricks. Too bad he’s too much of a gentleman that he can’t help himself but do this to stop your crocodile tears.
Poor Charlie Brown…He never had sarcastic and bitter mentors to guide him…How lucky I was to grow up in the pits of a Drag strip…and have a very successful series of top eliminators..One of the most remembered expressions of Charlie Browns fate was “You Lose” and a laugh all round! That’s the way it works!…
It irritated me in one tv special when Charlie Brown got blamed for losing the big football game because Lucy kept pulling the ball away. Okay, he wasn’t very smart to keep letting her hold the ball, but it was pretty obvious Lucy was pulling the ball away and NOBODY yelled at her for it.

at least she gave him a good advice.

If Lucy had been in her psychiatry booth, this advice would have really been worth the five cents. It’s better than a bruised back.

Always listen to a woman’s tears. Unless they are Lucy’s, that is.
