Breaking Cat News by Georgia Dunn for December 09, 2016
Transcript:
Puck: And we're back in 3...2...1... Lupin: Welcome back! Let's jump into tonight's news. The People are missing...Elvis? Elvis: Lupin, the People have been gone for two days. I know because I have been keeping track on the couch. Two. Whole. Days. Elvis, could you back off camera two? I know you're angry, but- I'm not angry. I'm just disappointed. Puck: Lupine, evidence points to the People's likely return. One: Witnessed have quoted the Man said they'd "be right back". Two: They left an unnecessary amount of food and water. Elvis: Lupin, I'm getting reports that someone pulled down all the curtains. Puck: Lupin, sources indicate we have enough food for 6 weeks. But then I ate all the plants. Lupin: For cat's sake, will you two cool it? Puck: Can I interest you in a colander full of kibble?

But, but, does this mean NO ONE IS CLEANING THE LITTERBOXES?!?!!!

Where is the intruder? Surely this is an occasion for her to make herself useful
And, of course, where are the people? What on earth could they be doing?

Good point, Sunflower Girl. More likely a penguin than an owl, then.

They will be back baby in tow. and Toddler. Do the Kids Have Names?Don’t think I’ve heard them.

I love that extreme close-up of Elvis—cracks me up every time! :D This is one of my favourite story arcs.

Obviously, the people have no cat loving friends nor neighbors to watch over to pets while they’re gone.

Keeping track on the couch, I love it. I can’t remember if The Intruder is set to appear next or not.

Thank goodness that Penny kept a calendar(he must have had one) of how many days I was gone and then threw up that many days on my return. Thank goodness he did not indicate on the sofa like a Siamese who shall not be named.

it’s troubled times when Lupin is the voice of reason!

But look, sweet pucky Pucky put a garnish on the kibble. The Boys will be fine. The Man and the Woman would not have it any other way.

Obviously this is just for plot purposes like leaving the bedroom window open in the dead of a snowy winter for Elvis to escape. I’m IRL the intruder probably took care of the boys. As for the family, they are Georgia and Ryan, and the children are Luke and Gwen. But from the cats’ perspective they are woman (ma’am) and man (man). Both sounding to the hoomans as meow. And the children are the toddler (who soon names the cats dadcat (Elvis), momcat (Puck), and Puck (Lupin), and the baby, whom Elvis is convinced is his baby.

It may be that at this point in the strip’s timeframe, that The Intruder (Georgia’s sister) lived farther away. They certainly could have had Tommy’s Woman come visit.
But why spoil a good story?

The Intruder (Woman’s sister) WILL make an appearance, and Lupin will do his best to charm her!

Haha! I do this, too, when we have to be gone a couple of days. ALL THE DISHES.

In real time, this was the guys’ first report after Georgia’s maternity leave in 2015. Yesterday’s “Be right back!” was on April 30; today’s “3… 2… 1…” was on June 15.
.
I’m not appalled by the thought of leaving cats alone for two days with extra food, water, and litter boxes, especially a team of three who can keep each other occupied. It’s not like leaving dogs alone for two days.
.
However, I am choosing to believe that it HASN’T been two days as Elvis is saying. I choose instead to believe that it’s been two sleep-wakes, which might be twelve hours at the most. Outrage has simply distorted Elvis’s sense of time.
.
There’s no rational reason for me thinking this, it’s probably just because I’ve been reading a lot of Get Fuzzy lately, and I’m projecting Bucky’s weird sense of time onto Elvis. (E.g., Bucky’s view that breakfast and morning have nothing to do with each other, or his grouchiness at being awakened “in the middle of the noon.”)

The people do have real names, the names in the strip are how the cats see them. There is the woman, Georgia, the man, her husband Ryan, the toddler, her son Luke and the baby, soon to come, Gwen. Even though they have moved a few times, the story is always in the big pink house. If you go to the breaking cat news web site you can find out a lot about them and the special reports, These are reruns while Georgia gets the strip ready for the newspapers and at first were only published twice a week. .

Remember the strip where the cats were furious because they hadn’t been fed? It was 7:31 a.m. and obviously they get fed at 7:30 a.m. So they don’t exactly allow for any delays or changes. All cats hate change, anyway. And that includes having a stranger come in to check on them.

I hope Elvis manages to catch the miscreant who pulled down the curtains.
