I went to that site and looked at the various designs. I was undecided between number 277 and number 480 but then I saw number 615 which I liked much better and voted for that. Anybody got any ideas which one will win?

Luann is still young. She’ll understand in a few more years.

You just keep marryin’ them until you get the right one. My mother in law was married 9 times.

I know so many unhappy people, both men and women, who will always be unhappy and alone because they keep trying to find that “better” one. There is the best one, and that is the one that is the right one. Trying to qualify or quantify on whether there is a better one, when one has found the best one, even if that best one may not be perfect (who is) is a recipe for sadness, despair, and loneliness. I hope Luann learns this.

I see that Mabel has no concept yet of things like, for example, Square. She’s ringin’ it old school. :-)

Luann’s new word for the day: hypergamy.

Well, THAT was a big letdown for Luann.

There is an optimal strategy for choosing the best mate. A lot of mathematics has gone into the subject, and what they’ve discovered is that you automatically reject the first n/e candidates (where n is the total number of potential matches and e is the base of the natural logarithms ~2.71828). Then you select the first candidate who is better than anyone you’ve already evaluated. Or the very last candidate if that never occurs..Science!

Luann…when you are in love, there is simply no one else! No such thing as “better.” Sometime a woman just Knows what dress is really “her.” My sister made my wedding gown, but I knew right away which pattern I wanted. ;)

Dang! I have been looking forward to Luann as an adult. But here we have a relapse to teenage myopia…

Toni may only have spent $200, but Nancy offered to help out and Nancy’s the one who seems to be closing her purse in the first cell… Toni may well have bought an dress that’s over her original budget without spending more than she planned to spend.

I’ve looked at the dress sketches… trying to get my mind into what Toni might want to wear (and feel comfortable wearing) for the big day. We get to cast one vote each day, and I’ll probably be casting more than one vote!

I remember times when my family and I would go to a Xmas tree farm and after looking at more than 60+ trees wound up leaving with the first one we looked at.

Luann’s responses during this whole arc have been so oddly different than I would have anticipated for her. Her behaviors are apparently aberrations associated with her prior junior high school “gaga” behavior over boys. Initially I was anticipating her involvement being that she would feel especially “grown up & mature” relating to the process, but she has mostly been expressing more “kid-like” glee. Very interesting.

Luann is a raging spaz who hasn’t yet shown a glint of maturity. I’d like to see her take on an actually difficult job when away from school this summer, and not the non-job she has at the library, which isn’t really work.

Brd’s m._in_law should rank her exes, and continue to marry until she dies or find someone better than the previous best. Come to think of it she may have using the secretary algorithm all along, but kept updating the pool of ranked husbands. Do we know how many suitors she has rejected?

Down home there were only two reasons to get married. You wanted to or you had to.

That’s why the divorce rate is so high – they don’t always turn out to be the ‘great one’ after all.

The great thing about this episode is that Toni asserted herself decisively, after asking for Luann’s help. What she got was general approbation and support. Hurray!

I met THE ONE while in high school. We dated briefly then went our separate ways. We reconnected a couple years later while I was in the service and had matured some. We were inseparable for 44 years when I lost her to Cancer in 2009. I still miss her.

Luann, it’s not about the wedding. It’s about the marriage.

It sure seems like the woman who helped them with the dress is a grown up Lucy van Pelt from the Charlie Brown comic strip.

David Faulkner, the mental image of Lucy Van Pelt growing up to become an owner of, or a clerk at, a wedding boutique, is a funny one to me! I must say, if this were Lucy, she certainly cheered up later in life. Although I immediately saw the resemblance to the “Cathy” strip when we were first introduced to “Mabel”, I must say that I’m getting a kick out of the thought of Lucy of “Peanuts” in the role. Thanks for the fun thought!

It was very upsetting to see how many submissions were just photos of existing gowns.  This is a clear violation of the terms that the dresss be “original designs” and “the Dress Design must (A) not violate or infringe any copyright, privacy or publicity right, or other proprietary or intellectual property right of any person or entity”. It’s no fun trying to sort through the mess.

Luann’s comment has nothing to do with not having met “the” right man. It’s because she’s a self-centered little ditz who’s disappointed that “her” shopping trip was over so quickly.

It’s not that Luann has to “grow up”, but she needs to stop living vicariously through the lives of others. A ten year old can have interests and a focus of his or her own and still not be grown up

Airman, i do not know if you saw my note yesterday but thanks for the lives and quality of lives that you and the crew you were in saved by transporting and caring for the wounded.

Current wedding mythology holds that the search for the wedding dress is supposed to involve lots of sturm und drang* – It’s supposed to include trying on many dresses and numerous shops, each of which is staffed with less-than-helpful “Mabels”, and much gnashing of teeth. And indecisiveness, which is why the bride usually brings along friends and/or family. And despite all that, everybody involved (except maybe the bride) looks forward to being part of the whole thing. So – I do get why Luann was disappointed that Toni seems to have bucked all those stereotypes. As to her question of whether them might be a better one out there… well… hopefully Luann will get to experience that “knowing” feeling for herself someday. Not too soon though, since resolving that love interest question seems to be the kiss of death for many comic strips!

It’s perfect if the person you love loves you back. That’s an amazingly rare phenomenon.

I don’t think Luann gives a hoot about any analogy with picking a husband. The bottom line is that she wants to stay in the store, look at dresses and make a big production over Toni’s selection. She came armed with sketches; she planned and designed her bridesmaid dress. For whatever reason this is all a big deal to Luann. But she forgot that the wedding is not about her and Toni doesn’t want a big deal. Luann needs to find her own ‘big deal(s)’ in life.

I think Luann’ is obsessed because deep down she envisions her own wedding, and like Brad she will want to make a big deal about it. She’s living her own wedding fantasy vicariously through Toni’s. Interestingly, someone like Quill would be like Toni and not want a big deal.

Next time Nancy and Toni go shopping, they should leave Luann at home, maybe with a babysitter….

Couldn’t you put a few function keys at the top of the post a comment box and make it so we could hit enter twice to put a space between lines?

If you put the calendar back in place, then referencing old comics could be done simply by giving the date. We can also put the dateat the end of URL. It has been very helpful to ask about a person or event and have Jay instantly respond. Great historian, that one.

I don’t think we needed the big posting that others created and like posting. Just answer a poster’s questions when they occasionally come up. It makes them feel more welcome to the community.

That’s what separates the grown women from the little girls.Nancy and Toni have such a satisfied look on their faces. while Luann is still totally lost! Does the sales clerk look like the sales clerk from the “CATHY” cartoon or is it just me?

Sheesh! That comment doesn’t bode well. Toni proposed to Brad only after she ran into her ex- married to another woman in a grocery store.
