Question: Why are toilet handles on the left-hand side? Answer: Most early flush toilets were flushed by pulling a chain above the tank. The chain was usually to the left of the tank, to allow the user to pull with his or her right hand while seated.

I’ve seen toilets with the handle on the right side (as you face the toilet). In Europe, various designs have something on the top of the tank to either push or pull.

Factoring in the life expectancy of dogs, you’d conclude that toilets were just as common when Fang’s grandparents lived back in the 1990s.
