    My father served. Time for him for a free meal at Applebee’s.

    Kind of sad, only Drabble and Peanuts are the only two comics that remembered. ;-(

    I mostly connected Bill Mauldin with his WWII cartoons. I didn’t realize until recently that he actually was still alive when Charles Schulz died. When Schulz had his stroke in 1999 which forced him to retire, I wrote a thank you letter where I also mentioned that he had made me aware of Bill Mauldin. Slightly embarrassing, since I wrote it under the assumption that Bill was dead, but I’m not sure if that was obvious in the letter.

    When we lived in Chicago in the 70s, Mauldin was editorial cartoonist for the Chicago Daily News. He was magnificent.

    Patton hated the way Mauldin portrayed officers and ordered him to stop. Eisenhower, who outranked Patton, said he loved Mauldin’s cartoons, countermanded Patton’s orders, and said Mauldin could keep on doing what he was doing.

    So Snoopy, the WWI flying ace, was also a WWII vet?(Of course, dressing up like that in today’s world is not recommended if you didn’t actually serve since that would be called “stolen valor”.)

    Let me add my thanks to our veterans. As screwed up as our country is right now (and, no, I’m not an anti-Trumper), we wouldn’t have what we have without you.

    And a tip of the hat to Ernie Pyle, too. Like Mauldin, he’s worth Googling.

    Yes, please remember the men and women who gave their lives for our great nation, and the men and women who are currently risking their lives to defend our great nation even now.

    One of my most prized possessions is a book my dad (WWII vet) gave me before his passing. It was a collection of Bill Mauldin cartoons.

    I salute you, Snoopy. And all of the veterans who are no longer with us. Wish I could post a pic of a poppy or something but never mind.

    @Snoopy_Fan

    Hello. Did you see my comment to you on Tuesday? I replied about an hour after you made a comment to me.

    And I’m sure you are dying to know….. Yes, I did freak out over the needle. I always do. But once it’s in I’m OK.

    Overall my blood donation went very well and I next donate in March. I’m looking forward to dedicating another donation to you. Just don’t know when yet.

    I hope your weekend is fantastically good. I miss you.

    xxx
