While I am glad that Rufus has decided to do at least one kind thing with his loot, I still am disappointed in him:
.
1. Giving the down on his luck fellow some money for food is indeed a generous thing. I am glad Rufus did that.
.
2. Yless, while I can definitely understand your reasoning and worries about giving a down-on-his-luck fellow some cash, I take a different view myself:
.
For me, it would be nicest if a person who asks me for money uses what I give him for what he said he would, I know that it may not happen. That does not diminish my desire to support him/her. If I give the person money for food, and he/she uses it for something else because they have an addiction (illegal drugs, gambling, etc.) I still feel I have helped the person in some fashion. If they are in need of that something they are addicted to in that fashion such an extent that they would lie about what they want….. then I presume it is truly needed for them…. until they can figure out how to go away from it.
.
I also do not begrudge a down-on-his luck person a modicum of respite from the harshness of the day they are facing either. If buying themselves a drink, or a cigar, or even junk food like a candy bar or pork rinds… gives them a bit more comfort than getting a soup and sandwich at a restaurant… who am I to complain about that? I give to try to help them feel better.
.
3. Rufus needs to try to think with his noggin a bit more (perhaps this is wistful thinking)….. he very graciously and willingly helped the fellow down on his luck…. but was mean, ornery, and downright rude to Joel? That was a very, very, very unkind behavior. Even though not by blood…. Joel is in effect…… FAMILY. Good friends ARE family and need to be treated as the important parts of a person’s life that they are!
Some people who win millions in a lottery sometimes buy a lot of stuff, give expensive gifts to friends, sometimes acquaintances. Before they know it, they are out of money, the stuff they bought is being repossessed, their net worth is less than before they won the lottery, and they have fewer friends.

All I can image though, is Joel….. alone, and downtrodden. His only comfort, his pipe.
