Is that how you live, Michael? While I think that living rooms shouldn’t be shrouded in plastic, like my grandmother’s was, they should still be cleaned up some. This is why we have a separate room for the kids to play in (one that has doors to close).
Makes perfect sense to me….. and as long as they’re actively “living” in the Living Room, what’s the problem? Now, once they’re done, they need to clean up their mess… (and good luck with THAT!)
Elly was probable cleaning up the last mess in another room while the kids were busy making this one. Moms could go through the house room after room all day doing this.
If you have two little kids and a big dog, this is the living room you end up with – unless it’s physically fenced off from use, which I have actually seen. :) But why would you want to lose an entire room in your house that way?
A funny little bit of history from Wikipedia – what we now call the “living room” was never meant for casual, everyday living:
In modern homes and apartments, the living room has replaced the old-fashioned front parlour. In the 19th century, the front parlour was the room in the house used for formal social events, including where the recently deceased were laid out before their funeral. The term marks the twentieth-century effort of architects and builders to strip the parlour of its burial and mourning associations. This room was relabeled with the more affirmative term “living room” in the 20th century.
I too am one of those who hate having a lived in living room. Maybe it’s that I know I’m the one that’s going to be cleaning it when it gets lived in. It’s easier to clean it when I have a part in living in it. Best time I’ve ever had in the living room was one new years day. We all were at home and played Video games all day and ordered pizza so mom (I) wouldn’t have to give up the controller to cook. We laughed and had lots of fun. It felt good to clean up after that.
