What amazes me is that Linus must have had that piece of paper with the number in his pocket before Lucy even told him she was counting snow flakes…

keep in mind that the two smartest characters in the gang are Linus and Marcie. At times they show intellect far beyond their years. Of course Marcie does tend to be more academically smarter than Linus while Linus tends to be theologically smarter than Marcie. But in situations like this Linus would be as likely to such statistical thinking as laid out.
