Ripley's Believe It or Not by Ripley’s Believe It or Not! for November 28, 2016
Transcript:
In 1917, about 10,000 sailors gathered at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Illinois to create a living flag! Sisters Augusta and Adeline Van Buren of Brooklyn, New York, rode motorcycles 5500 miles across the United States in 1916 to prove women's abilities to be wartime couriers! Wealthy and wacky! Nineteenth-century heiress Josephine Wendel, of New York City, had her table set for six imaginary guests each night and held conversations with them over dinner.

Roads were probably worse then, but why does it take 5,500 miles to drive 3,000 miles?

During the World War I era, photographers Arthur S. Mole and John D. Thomas made a number of images using people. A Google image search of the phrase “human statue of liberty” will return images of the Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell, Woodrow Wilson, the Marine Corps emblem, and others. There have also been similar treatments of the flags of different nations. One of the difficult parts in making such a photo is to account for perspective, the parts of the image furthest from the camera taking many more people than the parts of the image closest to the camera.
