    Something was definitely askew.

It was a frame, and not a good one. Not the kind with gilt edges and a valuable oil painting inside.

No. This frame started with a missing man and a trail of circumstantial evidence that came right to my door.

My theory was that Lazy Larry was hiding out somewhere. but that wasn’t going to help me when the frame said that he was dead and I was the killer.

Whoever had set this up knew their stuff. It was loose enough that the cops could read into it whatever they wanted, but tight enough that I was the only possible suspect.

I had to admire the handicraft, even as I was looking for the flaw that would keep me out of the gas chamber.

    In my line of work

I seem to see a lot more than most

Write ‘em down, pass ’em around

    It’s the Statute of Repose

They hardly use sorting frames any longer. Most of the sorting is done by machines now. But in their day, the sorting frames were the fundamental basis for postal processing.

“Angle of Repose is a 1971 novel by Wallace Stegner about a wheelchair-using historian,” WikipediaDoesn’t have to be a wheelchair
a deck chair will suffice, especially when lounging about on the Titanic, eh!

The chair of repose looks a bit like the kind of stirrup-equipped contraptions women are expected to straddle in the doctor’s office on specific occasions. He’s got one foot up already
do men undergo the same straddled indignity when their manbits and anal canal need greater scrutiny?

The larvae of the antlions and the unrelated wormlions Vermileonidae trap small insects such as ants by digging conical pits in loose sand, such that the slope of the walls is effectively at the critical angle of repose for the sand. Wikipedia.
