Arlo and Janis by Jimmy Johnson for December 06, 2016

Transcript:
Arlo: There're the Pleiades, the Seven Sisters, and Orion, The Hunter!
Arlo: The sisters flee in panic across the heavens as the smitten Orion pursues!
Janis: And if he catches them?!
Janis: It certainly is a man's universe!
Well, he forgot that Taurus the Bull is between Orion & The Pleiades because he is protecting them as Orion wanted to ravish one of them. Also, only 6 “sisters” are visible most people. With binocs you can see another dozen or more "sisters.
While we call it the “belt” of Orion, in South America it’s the dividing line between the thorax and the abdomen of a celestial spider. Pleasant dreams.
I’m blessed to be living in a remote location where star watching is fantastic on clear nights. I often get a good view of the Milky Way. So far this year I’ve spotted the International Space Station 27 times!
Orion, the Hunter. Turns out those 7 stars are just the tip of the star cluster, there are millions there, but only 7 stars could be seen at that time.
My wife gave the best reaction. “I can’s see where you WOW!”

No kitty, but a lynx. A big and little dog around Orion, and a pair of hunting dogs elsewhere. No horsey, but a Pegasus and a couple of centaurs (Centaurus and Saggittarius).

Alnilam is the middle of Orion’s belt. The Great Nebula is about 2/3 down his hunting knife. Mintika, the last belt star to rise and set, is only 12 minutes south of the equator, which is useful for finding east or west when rising or setting, if Polaris (off by six) is obscured by clouds.

They’ve avoided Orion for all the millennia we’ve known about them, so I’d say the women are doing okay in that area.

No, Janis, it’s not a man’s universe.
It just looks that way from your side of the fence.

I’ve never been able to recognize any constellation except for the Big Dipper.
The rest just look like random dots to me.

Perhaps it’s a woman’s universe if the sisters are able to distract old orion so easily :)

I can find Orion, and both dippers. Other than that, there are lots of sparklies.

And the one’s Arlo points out are only those that can be seen. Think of the many mankind can’t see or even comprehend!

As Kip W. says, it’s hard to tell which constellation is which nowadays as light pollution has obscured the little dotted lines connecting the stars.

Orion himself was killed by a giant scorpion which became the constellation Scorpios that still pursues him

If the women would make up some of the tales, they might have a different result.

They are just stars. Humans give them any meaning they have.

The sad thing is that they want to be caught but aren’t.

Don’t say that.
You’ll hurt their feelings.
