I put up my outdoor lights a little early this year – a week or so before Thanksgiving, because it was so unusually warm then.It was nice not needing to wear a coat while putting up the lights. Now we’re going to freeze our fannies off the next few days with high temps in the single digits and wind chills as low as -25F. I’m cold just thinking about it.
I just finished putting up my Christmas tree. In the first 5 minutes after putting it up, I had to chase 2 cats out of the tree. I haven’t decorated the tree yet – it took half an hour to put it up. It’s an artificial tree where I have to put on each branch separately. Now you can buy the same tree as a 1-2-3 tree, Just 3 pieces plus the stand. If there are any of those left after Christmas that I can get on 50% off clearance, I’m getting one to use next year. I got the one I’m using now for 75% off – paid just $22 for it (it’s 7 and a half feet tall) 4 years ago.
The traditional 12 days of Christmas start on Christmas day and end on Epiphany (6 January) when the wise men were thought to have visited. hence in the song, one gift for each day, culminating on Epiphany.
We have an Open House every year on the third Sunday in Advent. Really, really early this year! The house has to be “done” for the party, but we still leave the tree up until Epiphany. Never, ever heard of taking it down before then, but obviously some folks do.
Traditionally we always put up the tree and some of the decorations around the house on the day after Thanksgiving. We put up the lights on the house on Saturday. And by Sunday all the decorations were up. And this is all in November.
I don’t know anybody who waits until the day before Christmas.
