Gene: "We don't even have a business plan!"
Gene: The first thing they told us in business class...
Mary Lou: Give it a rest, OK?
Gene: Just sayin'!
Mary Lou: Pop and I ran 'The Dock' when you were in high school!
Classic argument – book learning (business school) vs. experience (helping run The Dock). Coupled with typical married-life tension, tight money and government health inspectors is going to lead to a lot of stress. But they’ll get through it, if for no reason beyond the fact that this is (usually) a comic strip, not a rocks-fall-everyone-dies drama.
Art imitates life. The election of the new President was not so much a reaction to the economic elites, or the political elites, but rather against the intellectual elites. The less educated view the world as a meritocracy, and rallied against it. Post mortem studies showed, for example, that a significant number of people voting for Breixit did not know what the European Union was. They just wanted to “stick it”.
I had to laugh at the comment “compromise, kids”. Someone should tell that to Congress.
Don’t even bring up your BA in business as a good point in an argument about fiscal smarts. Unless you have connections or are at top of the class, all they are good for is “would you like fries with that?”.
When we were young, we had been in our first house about half a year when there was a plumbing issue. After awhile my wife uttered those six words a new husband NEVER wants to hear: " maybe we should call my Dad…"
Gene seems to be being reasonable in trying to communicate his concerns. MaryLou seems less willing to discuss. She also now has gone off and is either a) crying, or b) shielding her face due to embarrassment about what she said to Gene.
.
Communication is the key to any relationship. If Gene has feelings about this matter, he needs to feel comfortable in expressing them even if they differ from MaryLou’s feelings on the matter. Her crying about Gene having opinions on this that differ from hers, may make Gene uncomfortable enough that he shuts up and holds in his own feelings again. This is not good.
Sounds like she wants a restaurant (which is a tough business) and he wants a farm (another tough business). Having them both will be tough squared. Now all that is missing is for her to tell him she’s pregnant.

It’s a little late now to argue about the kitchen. It’s pretty much a done deal.

Compromise, kids. Combine the college knowledge with that gained from the school of hard knocks and you should be fine.

I see a big corporate farm coming in to steal their little podunk piece of dirt under trump anyway.

Maybe this is the moment of truth this young couple needs to make everything work. Better now than down the road when it’s too late.

They’re both stressed, but she hides it by working harder. The worry is still eating both of them up.

They will get to a point where they can’t handle it all themselves. Then you have to hire help, and so on and so on.

PLEASE … can we just stop making everything about politics? I come here for a brief reprieve from stress and reality.

Is she simply crying, or is she realizing what she’s said?
With her emotions running so high on the surface, could she be “expecting” ?

Actually what I’m thinking what is going on in the last panel is perhaps she’s lied about her real age?

I’ve been saying for years that she is bad news.
