I work in retail. And sometimes I have to act as a backup cashier when it gets real busy up front. Normally, I work in the garden center or in the off season for garden center, I work in “seasonal”, which means back-to-school, Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Easter. But one day when I was cashiering, a customer really surprised me. The woman behind her in line was with her baby and she was buying diapers and other baby needs. After paying for her purchases and getting money back in change, this woman took $20 cash and handed it to the woman with the baby. She told her the money was for the baby. Then she took off so fast, the woman with the baby barely had a chance to thank her. The woman with the baby and I just looked at each other, stunned by what had just happened. We were both quite overwhelmed. I’m glad I was cashiering at that time and that I got to see this act of kindness. Things like that just don’t happen very often.
I would not mind that kind of thing happening to me, but since it does not, and I do not have the money to help others, I will help in other ways. Just the other day, I helped a much older person (I ma 75) unload her cart because she was having trouble doing so. She kept thanking me, and after she left, even the cashier thanked me for helping. It is something I can do!
I once had a cashier at a museum cafeteria insist upon giving me an employee discount. When I went to the restroom, I realized I looked dreadful – no makeup, dead tired (and it showed) and my hair really straggly. She must have thought I was ill or poverty-stricken.
Once in a while, people get an overwhelming desire to help their fellow human. It shows the unique kindness that is part of our nature. I have often gotten my purse ready in case someone can’t find enough change in front of me in line at the market. I would thankfully help out.
I had a co-worker that when going out to lunch would often choose another customer eating lunch at the same place and anonymously pay for theirs at the same time he was paying for his. I’m sure these customers were very surprised when they went to pay their bill. It was very inspiring.

I think Opal needs to throw away that thread-bear shirt of Earl’s and shave his face.

You ought to be ashamed of yourself Earl. Or at least be thinking of a way to pay it forward since you are NOT poor!

Dressing like a Bum has advantages. Earl could probably get a young chick when he tries it again.
