Yes, homeowners will try to bribe you, but inspectors who TAKE bribes are rare. Aside from the question of honesty, it would be really stupid: you’re almost certain to get caught and fired. Who risks their job for a hundred bucks?
I find this strip a bit insulting. I’m tired of Government workers getting dumped on.
If you have ever dealt with the “the gummit” you would find this cartoon sadly funny. After storm damage to our home and the place next door, we used the same contractor and things were done identically. Unfortunately, we had different housing inspectors; their house passed and ours didn’t. The answer we received was, “I’m not responsible for how he does things.” When we contacted the contractor, he asked who we had do the inspection, and when he told him, he sighed and said, “Yeah, that’s who I figured. He’s …”
There as a case in Baltimore a few years back where three different inspectors gave a woman three different answers; she ended up going to court over it.
If everybody read the same book, people wouldn’t have such a low opinion of government workers. As it is, we often feel we’re being jerked around.
we had an inspection of a newly constructed building go like that. One example: The fire marshal, who got paid for every visit, kept finding new things wrong – even his mandated changes (move the alarm 2 feet to the left on one trip and then the next, move it down). My boss kicked me out of the next meeting with the county when I asked about the next 5 buildings “Could we, instead of the piecemeal trips and random charges, just pay an up-front, flat fee instead”
