The portrait looks more like the artist than the model, I have to say.

“It is said that when Titian was working on a portrait of. Charles V he dropped his paintbrush, which the Emperor picked up. At this, Titian knelt before him, saying, ‘Sire, a servant of yours does not deserve such an honour’, to which diaries replied ’Titian is worthy to be served by Caesar.”

    Sorry for the typos.

“It is said that when Titian was working on a portrait of Charles V he dropped his paintbrush, which the Emperor picked up. At this, Titian knelt before him, saying, ‘Sire, a servant of yours does not deserve such an honour’, to which diaries replied ‘Titian is worthy to be served by Caesar.’”

The story, from Ridolfi, is almost certainly an invention, but it is well documented that Charles V and Titian were close friends.

It’s intriguing to me that there’s no paint on the floor anywhere. Could that be a deliberate subtle comment by Bergeret?

    See https://academic.oup.com/oaj/article-abstract/2/2/7/1536295/Titian-as-a-Court-Painter for the article.
