    A more accurate statement would be that not all of his ancestors endured slavery. Surely someone paired with someone else who had a different history.

    Pretty darn sure slavery has been abolished for close to 150 years now. How is he, in any sense of the word NOT free? Unjustified prejudice I can see, (and find repugnant myself) but no one owns anyone anymore.

    Why is it so important that they have no slaves in their back ground. There were millions who were and survived to enjoy some freedom. And as a reminder that it must not happen again even though it is happening now.

    Pirates tended to be former slaves who either revolted or were freed by other pirates who hunted for slave ships in order to gain more crew and more ships.
